Back in January, Rangers signed Matt Polster. The USA international was handed a two-and-a-half-year deal by the club, who had worked for some time to bring him in. He came from the MLS with a decent reputation as an athletic and versatile operator, capable of playing right-back or in midfield. Polster turning out for Chicago…
Seems quite clear to me. If Tavernier had gone Flanagan, who also covers at LB, would have been only RB. SG has said he wants 2 players for each jersey.
Tav could have gone for big money at last minute, SG got a cheap insurance buy in.
Gerrard made it clear no players would be allowed to go in the final few days of the window as there wouldn’t have been time to replace them. Had Tav left earlier than that we’d have seen a new RB coming in. He’s a fan of Flanagan but there’s no way he would let a bloke with over 20 assists from last season leave, be content with replacing him with someone who has 1 since he arrived and leave Polster (who I think it’s clear he doesn’t actually think is good enough) as the only alternative.
