Why would we rip up Pena’s contract? If we have to pay him for the next 18 months, we own him for the next 18 months. If he isn’t fit, or is drinking instead of attending AA, fine him 2 weeks wages every fortnight. We have an obligation to help and support him, but no obligation to fund someone who is not doing everything they can to recover.
As soon as we release him, paying up his contract, he will recover and sign a new contract somewhere else.
