Stevie G was always going to learn on the job at Rangers – be patient

When Stevie G took the Rangers job, it was a move which sent ripples right through world football. Here was one of the globe’s biggest clubs in turmoil, turning to one of the biggest sportsmen alive to rescue them. Gerrard had conquered Liverpool, England, Europe and the US during a pretty special playing career. But…

We all (hopefully!) learn from our mistakes. I agree we need to give Stevie G some patience. I am not trying to criticise Gary Mac but Graeme Souness had Walter plus real money to win the league in his first season. Stevie and Gary have done a great job and if we are honest, exceeded our expectations. His staff too are learning on the job but we have the right people in place to gives us the success we deserve. Keep believing. WATP.

I have no problem with mistakes while learning. It was inevitable. I do find it strange that Worral gets to learn through mistakes while Katic gets dropped for them, but that is SG’s call.
I agree with Hugh that we have exceeded expectations this season. Problem with that is it just raises expectations. From not expecting a league challenge to demanding one. I also agree that Gary Mac does not seem to be providing the depth of mature reflection and advice that Walter did.
But, apart from his latest mistake - changing a winning formula by altering formation and dropping someone who had a great game in our biggest win in years, before a hard away game against a challenger - I am happy with our progress and his choices

I think the whole Management team have worked wonders with what players they found there, when they arrived. They got in a great keeper and a steady centreback ( Goldson). They also snapped up Flanagan…probably in case Tavernier was going to be sold! We’re still dodgy in defence, at Right Back, second Centreback and Left Back!

We’ve got too many midfielders now, although some are injured, and one of the best prospects in Scottish Football can’t get a regular game ( McCrorie).

Up front, we struggled in the first half of the season with only one goalscorer ( Morelos). Lafferty didn’t do it! Now we have Defoe and Morelos, but can they play together? Hope so!

However, the biggest problem is the back 4 NOW, where you have to get it more reliably solid, so that the rest of the team can do their job finding goals!

There are some other good youngsters coming through, who will potentially improve things in the next 2 years

We are only where we are because of Steven Gerrard. The players we brought in this summer are here because of him. Defoe, Goldson, Katic, Barasic, Kent, Coulibaly, Sadiq, Flanagan, even Ejaria and Worral. Arguable the deciding factor in each of those signings was the fact that they would be working for Gerrard. Have they all been a success? no, but did Walter Smith never sign a dud? He’ll learn from his mistakes, and make better informed decisions going forward. Whatever the outcome of this season, we will be stronger next season again, more experienced, more robust, and more consistent. I believe he’s here for the long haul and I’m excited to see what the future brings.
