Rangers midfielder Aribo looked lost against Celtic, says Ferguson

Barry Ferguson has criticised Steven Gerrard’s tinkering for Sunday’s Old Firm clash at Ibrox, in his Daily Record column. After a perfect start to the league season and having won the last two home derbies, the Gers went into the clash as favourites. There was plenty of optimism at Ibrox pre-kickoff, given recent results. (Photo…

Ferguson spot on, Celtic defenders were there for the taking. No Jones, no Barasic, and no Morelos when they all are on decent form and take on defenders with pace but Rangers looked lethargic with no bite, no speed and actually no clue. We also bought a two million defender and King who played in European international semi final and has won the league in England they were not played, why have them on the bench? When you buy big money guys they should make an immediate improvement. Celtic bought players and they played that was the difference. I just hope Helander, Edumundson, Jones Hastie and Barker don’t end up like Grezda, signs are not good. We also need a striker as a 36 year old Dafoe will not cut it in Europe.

The signings are about squad depth - last season we were so thin we were burst by Christmas - that won’t happen this time. And Gerrard explained the absence of Morelos - get back behind the manager he’s done a phenomenal job so far

I understand the argument about squad depth but we won nothing last year and ten signings have come in only one started, I would have expected the quality on the park to improve and the one player that did play (aribo) he looked lost against Celtic and was subbed. I am very supportive of the team but also realistic, bringing in 10 players is useless if standard of team on the pitch remains the same as last year, especially when Celtic bring in signings who play then beat us at home by 2 goals, things need to improve and quick, otherwise we will see same quality on pitch as last year and win nothing and not progress in Europe. Kent is also included in this as we won nothing with him playing 48 games.

We have a deeper squad than last year, we’ve started the season better than last year, the squad is fresher than last year - the young boys will take some time to bed in and these things happen in one off Old Firm games - no need for knee jerk reactions Parlane, hold your nerve and trust in Gerrard!

I disagree we have been beaten by Celtic, struggled against St Mirren, Legia and Kilmarnock McCrorie and Hastie and Candies away and players bought not any better than what we have as a first team and 7 million down on player we had last year that played in a team that won nothing. Where is the improvement and what players have strengthened the team because Aribo and Ojo against Celtic were poor Jones sent off for shocking tackle. Where is the improvement? deeper squad is great but no use if players are not better than what we have.

Ok fair enough you’re right Gerrard hasn’t managed to win the league in his first season, or in the first 4 games this season - get him out!

I’m not saying sack Gerrard, I’m just saying so far it’s not looking good. I hope I am proved wrong. Maybe with at least three or four from Kent Ojo king Helander and edumdson and Aribo and Jones in the team and we win one game after the other then Gerrard will be looked on as a genius but if he plays same players as last year the way he did against Celtic and we don’t win anything then yes maybe he should go.`not impressed we still have Defoe he will not cut it in Europe at 36.

Last year we’d lost two or three games at this stage - Aribo has shown bags of potential and didn’t turn up in his first Old Firm match, he’s young and shouldn’t be judged on that - Defoe has scored something like 6 goals already this season and will score a barrel load more - Morelos will play in Europe - sometimes bringing in new players gives the current lot a kick up the backside and I think we’ve seen that with a number of them - it’s early early days this season and waaaaay too early to be getting all negative

love your optimism but Celtic buy players put them in the team and beat us at Ibrox, they had three new defenders and a new goalie they had not played together. If we don’t have players when we play at home who can take advantage of that situation it’s not looking great. Then when you see the tackle and suspension for Jones it gets worse, we don’t have time for the team to gel. Not one trophy last year we need clear improvement I don’t see it. Defoe may have scored a few goals, but three of them against a poor hibs side down to ten men, he needs to do it in big games at 36 I don’t think he will. Gerrard did not pick him against Legia and he was rubbish against Celtic it’s just not good enough.

Early days Parlane, early days

I’d love to see more of King on the small time he played it looked like he’s direct through the middle with some accurate passes with strikers picking the ball up in the middle like DeFoe and Morelos who can turn and shoot on a dime it would give us more options with Kent and Arfield taking care of any loose ball’s.
