Rangers fans question James Tavernier's suitability as Ibrox captain

Rangers captain James Tavernier has come under heavy fire for his role in the Scottish Cup defeat to Hearts which all but ends the Ibrox club’s domestic season. With Rangers 12 points off the pace in the Scottish Premiership and having failed to land the Betfred Cup, the Scottish Cup appeared Steven Gerrard’s last realistic…

You can’t defend him by saying that the other players weren’t up to it either, he’s the Captain, it’s part of his job to get the others going. I think that’s been a major issue all along, our leadership on the pitch are not up to it. SG has put his faith in players who do not have a winning mentality. Get on me all you want, but there’s a clear difference in the other guys ability to play consistently and carry a winning attitude on and off the pitch. We will not stop 10iar with this team. Can’t even buy a bloody trophy…and against a (basically) relegated team…no excuses.

Gutless, pathetic, inept, performance by all involved. Totally unacceptable! Every player should be fined a week’s wages. Alfredo gets dropped for arriving late from Colombia, his teammates didn’t arrive at all. As for SG ,your team pal, your tactics you share the blame and shame. Getting beaten twice recently by a team that will get relegated and couldn’t score in a brothel beggars belief.

Tavernier haw been poor for over a year he relies on the quantity of crosses not quality I would love to see the statistics of balls that reach there man compared to the ones that don’t plus you have to deal with the fact he’s poor at defending and doesn’t want to track back but apparently this guy is the captain I would sell him for 4 mill never mind the 8 the was rumoured

I’ve not been surprised since he got the armband. One of the worst captains we’ve ever had. On form, average captain. Off form, an absolute waste of space.

Need a captain that is not afraid to grip these guys on the park. As much as I love McShagger as a captain, we need an outfield player to take control. Give Ryan jack the armband for next season.

Tavernier is never a defender, ive been saying it for as long as he’s worn a Rangers shirt, a defender who cant defend, ive been watching the Gers, since the 70s,seen some great defenders over the years, but Tav is never a defender, might be better moving him into midfield,if he has to play for us at all🤔

The Worst Gers Captain “Ever” !!!

I’ve disagreed with Jordan’s defence of Tav. He’s just not up to the job, he’s a second string championship player, at best. And just because Barisic has said “he’s a great leader” isn’t enough validation to overwrite his lack of leadership - and quality - on the pitch during the big games.

Look at how well Polster played when he filled in for Tav.

What should happen for the rest of the domestic seasons?

Drop the blue-eyed favourites. Drop the non-performers. Fill in those squad places with hungry youths. Start to build for next season.

When Rangers got punted to the 3rd division back in the day, my thought then was rebuild using youth players. Create home-grown heroes who’ll put the badge before anything else. Make the youth development system pay for itself. Instead, the club brought in Bosmans and £500,000 diddies.

Use the rest of this car-crash of a season to clear out the over-rated, under-performing garbage and give the kids a chance.

I don’t think Tavernier is the captain we need. We need someone who consistently brings above average performances, is in the centre of the park where the action is and has the ability and desire to shout at others, motivate them, lead them. They also have to be planning to stay for a while.
Not sure Jack ticks all those boxes, but he and Arfield are the only ones who tick some.
Maybe we need to look for another midfielder. I would bring Docherty back next season and play him, see if he has what it takes.
But that would require SG to look hard at himself and admit a mistake, which is not easy for anybody to do. I get why Tav got the job, SG was just in and nobody else had been there long enough. But now comes the hard part, taking the armband away and keeping the player motivated.

The Liverpool gaffer ?!! Eh, not just now Cameron_Willis92

Tav is a good player and has been a great servant to the RFC. Is he our ideal Captain?..no, but since 2012 we have been rebuilding towards something close to an ideal. The most important thing is that SG has a good look at himself, his tactics and his squad and then stops 10IAR.
