Steven Gerrard has explained why he gave James Tavernier the Rangers captaincy when he was appointed as manager but stopped short of a full endorsement of the job he is currently doing, as quoted by the Glasgow Times. If you decide on a captain you have to be 200% sure he is the right man, no guesses.
I can understand why Tavernier got the armband when SG came in, there were no other players who had been there for long except Jack, who had 4 red cards in his first season.
I can understand why he has not taken armband off Tavernier, it is a bad statement to make and by publicly demoting the player, it risks demoralising him and devaluing him in the transfer market.
My forecast is that Tavernier will not be captain next season. He will be sold if he wants to go and experience the football and money in England and will go with our best wishes, in return for a very large cheque. If he stays, he will not be captain.
