The entire Rangers team didn’t cover themselves in glory last night, but one area in particular continues to prove a problem for the club. Rangers lack bite, creativity and above all else, ability in midfield. Coulibaly and Ejaria are miles off it at the moment. Not that it matters in the long term for them…
“Ryan Jack needs to be doing more. He seems a cult hero amongst fans for some reason, but he contributes little offensively for Rangers. It’s hugely frustrating.”
That criticism could also be aimed at McGregor and the 2 centre backs - except that is not their job. Anyt more than we expect Morelos to save penalties. Jack is CDM, the anchor in front of the defence, there to shield and protect, to scavenge for the ball and break up attacks. He is not a box-to-box midfielder, expected to do everything. Neither is N’golo Kante.
CDM is an important and valuable position. i think it is unfair to criticise the best option we have in that position for not being a winger as well, or for not covering any other position
Haha I think that’s a bit extreme mate. This is what I’m talking about. Jack gets a bit of a free ride. We needed someone to take that game by the scruff of the neck and he’s in the middle of the park. Why not him?
I understand he fulfils an important role in front of the CBs, but what’s wrong with demanding more of him in transition and on the ball? For me, he could be a much more complete midfielder that way, and a much more effective player for us. At the moment he drifts in and out of games and is rarely seen when the chips are down. He has to do more, and the reason why I’m saying it is because I think he can. I think there’s a player there.
That’s why I said it’s hugely frustrating.
