Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson has been a stalwart figure in the Rangers defence over the last two seasons. A towering, commanding presence, he’s the vocal leader of the backline and – until Ryan Kent arrived [Sky Sports] – was the most expensive member of our team (£3.5m). But in the last few weeks there’s been…
A fair point to rest Connor. He has done a good job for us but competition with any of the other 3 centre backs must mean that no one is guaranteed a place. I certainly don’t want to lose Connor but the first team has the look of a strong squad and it will take more than our first eleven to win us our long awaited trophy to get us on the road to be the best in Scotland.
I believe that if that mistake was Katic he would be dropped, everyone should be treated the same. If I was Helander or Edumundson I would not be too happy if Goldson was to continue.
If some players spend all season watching games, we cannot complain if they are but ready when called upon. That is the point of rotation.
Doesn’t happen as much at CB, but it has to happen a bit to ensure all four are kept ready, even if you have a first choice pairing for the big games.
We are only one bad tackle away from being down to one striker, which scares me.
Been saying that for weeks 11 players brought in and against Celtic 1 started and he was rubbish, out of the other two one has a shocking tackle and is heading down the same route as Morelos last year and Ojo was garbage. As for Defoe no service but was slow and had no ideas, Morelos was bright, fast and willing to.come deep and run at defenders. Point is if we lose Morelos to injury we are left with a 36 year old who has been poor apart from a hatrick against a poor hibs side down to 10 men. Stewart and Kent are not strikers. We also have beaten Legia, Killie and St Mirren with last minute goals with a struggle. it’s not looking good especially when we barely had a shot on target against a Celtic team with 3 new defenders and a keeper who had not played with any of them. It says above we gifted Celtic the win, I disagree, ok it was one bad mistake and a goal when we were chasing the game but at home one shot in the 60th minute is garbage.
I agree that Goldson should be “rested” as the lad has virtually played non stop since his arrival.
I would maintain he looks jaded rather than too comfortable in his position however from the displays of both Helander and Edmunson I’d go with Edmunson at the moment as Helander looks like he needs time to get up to speed.
I think both players are of good quality but just feel Helander is slightly cumbersome which could be a result of limited game time( catch 22 I know).
Hes been shaky over the last few weeks ? We hadnt lost a goal in the last three games he played until Sunday .Yes, he gave the ball away for the goal , but Katic was equally to blame for stopping to try to play offside .The two of them have been playing well together so there is no need for a change .Connor will get a rest now over the next two weeks and Helander will get his chance at some point, and when he does he will need to be better than he was against St Mirren , when he looked really awkward . Goldson has been one of our key players and remains so, he has been pulled wide to cover Tav who has been way worse over the last few weeks .I don`t hear any calls to play Polster instead of him.
Maybe it’s because there has been no major mistakes from Tav that has led to us losing a match. I think some people tend to forget his first duty is to defend and he has been pretty solid.
Goldson has been a very good acquisition. Think back 2 seasons when we had the “Ginger Numpty” at the back who used to lump it straight back upfield to the opposition. I’d keep Goldson in and put in Edmondson for Katic. He’s looked good every time he’s had a chance.
Parlane’s comments are spot on about the lack of fire power up front and about Tavernier. I’ve been Tavernier’s worst critic but this season he seems to be defending better ( so far)!
Yeah, Helander looked stilted first time out, whereas Edmundsen looked natural in his debut. Would like to see Edmundsen/Katic pairing soon - maybe against Livvie?
