Ahead of the January transfer window, many people are discussing who Steven Gerrard should bring into the club. One of the big questions, however, is just how much money should the Rangers manager truly get? The most important thing the Rangers board can do next month is back the manager. They’re keeping in touch with…
Sir Alex Ferguson, a manager with no small reputation, stated 50% was a good success rate for transfers.
gerrard has already binned 2, but they were not signings, so like Coulibaly, Worral and Kent probably shouldn’t count as they have not been bought. Of the five I would only keep Kent, but that is just my opinion.
Grezda and Katic, I agree are still not the finished article but Grezda arrived injured and is working his way back. Katic I feel was badly let down by the manager when being dropped for Worral. But I don’t know what has gone on in the dressing room or training field.
Flanagan is not a great LB, but neither is McGregor. He filled in when asked. He has an England cap at RB. If, or when, Tavernier goes for big money, that will be the time to judge Flanagan’s right foot instead of his left.
Lafferty has been a disappointment to those who wanted him and argued his case. Not me. To be fair to SG, Laff was brought in at the end of the window when we had failed to secure our first choices.
In summary McGregor, Goldson, Barisic, Arfield, +
Grezda, Katic ?
Lafferty -
Kent, Ejaria, Sadiq, Worrall, Coulibaly should be judged when we pay for,or sign, them.
On that basis it is 4 positives, 1 negative and 2 undecided(I think both will come good) or 3 if you feel Flanagan should not be judged until he plays RB. Lafferty is a hard call as although I am not a fan, we knew he is a forward, not a striker, doesn’t get many goals but we desperately need another forward at the end of the window.
I think that is well in excess of the 50% Ferguson aimed at, but feel free to disagree
I’m certainly in no place to argue against Alex Ferguson!
Personally though I feel the loan signings can be judged. These, for me, are players that Steven Gerrard believed to be good enough to come to Rangers and produce. Loan signings or not, it was Gerrard’s decision to try and improve the team.
You’re spot on with your assessment of the five. Only Kent has been the real positive for Rangers. Worrall, Sadiq, Coulibaly, and Ejaria just haven’t worked out. There’s still time for Coulibaly though if he can sort himself out over the Winter break.
It’s not exactly been a disastrous window for Rangers or anything like it. The team have improved, although I’m starting to think it’s less than what I first believed. The Old Firm game at the end of the month will tell us a lot.
