When Rangers signed Leicester City midfielder Andy King on loan in the summer, there was admittedly some confusion about the signing. Not least because of how well-stocked Rangers are in the middle. It also appeared ex-Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers had just given Rangers a boost by sending the Foxes legend to Ibrox on loan. But…
Only rationale I can see is that with 2 games a week until next year we need the depth. Also in case of injury.
We have at last count 14 midfielders at Ibrox, that’s not including Hastie, McCrorie, Herrera, Middleton and Holt I suppose he was brought in for a reason.
A plan???
i wish he would hurry up and tell us what it is then.
He’ll be costing at least 20k per week.
If he cant start against the likes of Livingston at ibrox, off a midweek Europa game, with his pedigree, then when does he start.??
Given the amount of midfielders I would have rather seen Shankland at less than half that amount a week, because if one of our two strikers get injured or banned were stuffed.
It’s probably a bigger selling on fee as well. 19 midfielders two strikers, it’s a bit odd. Though McAllister and SG play that position it’s maybe like the two wee boys in the sweetie shop going mad and not actually thinking maybe I should save some of this for a beano or a fitbaw. Blinkers on also not much imagination when the only striker you bring is your pal at 36. We are trying to stop 9 in a row a massive season and only one striker brought in since he arrived over a yer ago, it’s worrying.
We have 7 midfielders (8 if you consider Greg Stewart a midfielder) who are competing for places in the first team, that includes King in the 7). A couple of injuries and a suspension, and we would be down to the bare bones, and on occasions Gerrard might want to play with four midfielders ( or using Arfield in an advanced position). King adds quality to our midfield options, realistically he looks unlikely to become a first pick. But he appears to be a good back-up option.
Let’s remember what a fantastic start we have had to the season so far, so we should trust that Stevie knows what he is doing.
These guys can all pay in midfield Aribo, Jones, Davis, McCrorie, Docherty, Holt, Herrera, Hastie, Arfield, Murphy, Ojo, Middleton, Stewart, Barker, Halliday, Kamara, Jack Kent and King that’s 19 my point was about players on the books who are receiving a wage it’s pathetic we don’t need them all. two strikers !!. As for a fantastic start it’s been ok. We got beat by Celtic, only last minute wins against Legia and Killie, a free kick to beat st mirren and wins against Hibs and Livy where we struggled until they got guys sent off. As well as draws against Progress and Legia it’s not great. we are doing OK but after spending over 11 million it’s where we should be at the least. As for your point about injuries and suspensions two strikers is just foolish one guy out and we are really struggling. With 19 midfielders at least 12 play in Kings central position, to be honest I find it bizarre. where did you get 7??? even so If it’s only central it should be at most 4 players …SG said it himself 2 for every position.
The negativity is just so draining, Parlane - it’s incredible how relentlessly you can keep this up in the face of the team racking up more and more wins - a huge win in Europe followed by a thumping of Livingston in a tricky post Europe tie
I am only answering the post. I think we have too many midfielders not enough strikers. King will fit in somewhere but balance is all wrong, that’s not being negative it’s being realistic. As for the win against Livingston it was close for a large part of the game, only after the sending off did it become easy, same against hibs an accumulation of four late goals put a gloss on those results. I am hopeful of the future. I hope things go well, unlike some I am not getting carried away and I am not going to sit back and be over the moon when I think we should be doing much better. 15 competitive matches 3 we have not won, two won against teams with 10 men, two won with last minute goals, another game with a narrow win with a free kick. Six games we have conceded goals. I don’t think that’s brilliant. Also before the Dutch game the harder games were Legia, Progress and Celtic and out of 5 we only won 2.
