On Thursday morning, as followed by the Rangers Twitter account, Steven Gerrard and Jermain Defoe addressed a press conference. Just hours previously, Rangers had hammered Kilmarnock 5-0 to progress to the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup. Alfredo Morelos was the star of the show last night. To start with, let me confirm I’ve supported Rangers for 65 years! My family moved to London in the late 1950’s and my father sold Rangers Pools Tickets at his work, at Heathrow, for 30 years.
When we lived in Croftfoot, a Catholic family lived in the downstairs flat and they had a boy aged the same age as me. I got a clip round the ear for playing football with him in the small back garden! " We don’t associate with them!" my father said!
I then went school in England and was amazed that all denominations went to the same school, and played in the same football team! Nobody asked what your religion was, when you got in the team!!
My father continued to behave like he was at the Battle of the Boyne…would never drink out of a green cup, was upset when his grandchildren had anything green…even a hankie!! When I was 15, I pointed out to him that I was amazed he was so worried about “religion”, as he didn’t believe in God! So why was he using religion in his competitive football support! He couldn’t answer, and stormed out of the room!!
Surely, after 400 years, Rangers fans should be concerned with getting back the “Best Team in Scotland” badge, rather than worrying about what religion the opposition is?
I bet the guys who called Steve Clarke out last night are like my Dad…haven’t been in a Church for years!
I know, I’ll probably get some abuse for saying this, but it’s got to stop.! I’d ask the vocal abusers this…What religion do you think Alfredo Morelos is? Get real and into the 21st Century!!
I still love and support Rangers…always will!!
Fingolf, totally agree. Both sides need to cut this out. I used to sing the songs, and love them, but never actually disliked anybody of a different faith. Never mind a different section of the same faith. We have the same god as Judaism and Islam.
But I accept it is no longer acceptable to sing these songs, so I don’t.
Move on, join the 21st century
