Rangers sold Martyn Waghorn to Ipswich Town in August 2017 for an estimated fee of £990k (Transfermarkt). Since then, he’s largely made a mockery of that transfer fee. During his solitary season at Ipswich, he tore up the Championship scoring 16 goals and registering eleven assists across the league campaign. Waghorn bends a free-kick into…
Just ask the question why did we sell him he loved the club.
Personally, I liked him and Windass, and I would have liked to seen him do well. Having daid that, I never got the feeling he was good enough to step up in the Premiership. I could be wrong but while he got 20 goals in 25 games in the Championship, he got 7 goals in 32 games in the Premiership. Simply not good enough. Also, he turned down a contract extension. If we had not sold him when we did, he could have walked for nothing in 12 months.
Lastly, would you drop Morelos for Windass? No, didn’t think so. If he had signed a new contract, he would have been a backup striker/wide man
Should also mention, before today he had 2 goals in 18 games. Not really tearing it up, is he? Think he has got slightly beyond his true level
The season after leaving, Waghorn got 16 in the Championship for Ipswich alongside 11 assists. Those are impressive stats so don’t think it’s fair to say he’s out of his depth. Much more modest this season with Derby, but has delivered in cup competitions as mentioned in the article. If he could do it with a mid-table team last season in that league he most certainly could have done it in the SPL. Point taken on the contract situation, though.
No suggestion of either Waghorn or Windass playing instead of Morelos. Had either stayed they could have played behind him or out wide (-ish in the case of Waghorn) and would be offering a more consistent goal threat than we have at the minute from those areas.
Fair point Jordan, he did deliver at Ipswich. But now, in a stronger team, he isn’t doing it. His total in the Championship is played 160, scored 36. So, just in between 1 in 4 and 1 in 5. Take away his Golden season at Ipswich and he is 20 goals in 136 games, almost 1 in 7.
As you say, he is not out of his depth, and as I say, I really liked the guy. I would have kept him rather than let him go for a million, which was silly. Don’t even know if there was a sell on. I feel we should have got at least double.
Still, I feel we are a stronger team than we were, so off to the pub, in hope
Yes in fairness, take away the Ipswich goals and it doesn’t make for impressive reading. Maybe not someone you can solely rely on to produce, but great attitude and really good left foot.
I saw somewhere previously that the club were in line to get £800,000 from his move to Derby, but unsure how accurate that was/whether it materialised or not.
