Former Ger's comments on oft-scapegoated Rangers star are ridiculous

Former Gers player Derek Ferguson has assessed current skipper James Tavernier, on Open Goal. The 27-year-old has played 53 times for Rangers this season and is one of the first names on the team sheet for Steven Gerrard. Yet, whenever the Rangers underperform he often comes in for heavy criticism. He’s frequently blasted for not…

He’s not even half decent.
Absolutely rotten.
We will win nothing with this calibre of player.
The amount of times play breaks down at him is incredible.

Kenny, if he is absolutely rotten, as you say, then which right backs would improve our team? If they add less in attack, and given that Tavernier adds more than any other player in Scotland that is quite likely, how would you compensate for that?
You say play breaks down with him. But if he is Scotland’s best for assists, surely every other fullback, midfielder and winger must be worse, by definition? Including Tierney.
If he is actually absolutely rotten, you must see something that SG doesn’t. So you are also questioning Gerrard’s ability as he has picked Tavernier every game he has been available. I don’t think he has missed a game.
I don’t know where you go from here. Gerrard out? We are the top scorers in the league. Tavernier is the most effective attacker in the league. So who would you improve us with?

I agree with Ferguson entirely! Tavernier is a good player going forward, but is a hopeless defender…he should be in the Bolshoi Ballet, not in a football team defence!! I was away, for the Celtic Match, but would have had to say “I’ve been telling you so, since last October!”.

When the Captain makes basic mistakes, like setting up the Celtic winner, how can he shout at other players demanding they improve?

Sorry, but all really good winning teams, anywhere, have always started with a strong defence…then built up the midfield and forwards.

I agree with Kenny, that we’ll never win anything with a “Gung Ho” right back, who is often “missing, not in action”, when the opposition break quickly with the ball.

You ask who I’d put in his place? Anybody, from Flanagan, Polster or young Houston, would defend better!

As for all the goals he’s scored…most are penalties, which my grannie should score!

Take any good offer for him…we’ll never succeed with him in the team!
