Ex-Rangers goalkeeper Cammy Bell has been opening up about that fumble into the back of the net against Motherwell back in May 2015. The former Kilmarnock stopper misjudged the flight of Marvin Johnson’s shot to hand Motherwell a 1-0 lead on the day and 4-0 lead on aggregate to all but condemn Rangers to another…
You are being kind to a diddy who sold the jerseys that day .He can have his opinion which perhaps helps him salve his conscience but thanks to him we`ll never know whether we could have fought back or not .He is also wrong to say we had run out of steam before the play off games , we were actually on a good run which had seen us beat QOS and Hibs in the earlier qualifying , both teams that had troubled us all season.
To trade in Neil Alexander for this muppet is just another example of McCoists ineptitude as a manager which cost us an extra year in the lower leagues.
Given the difficult circumstances I actually thought McCoist did OK, and it’s a bit harsh to be bringing him down. He stepped up to the plate and took the job at the most difficult time of Rangers history. Let’s not forget he was left with a decimated squad and no money to bring anyone in. I feel he should be praised for what he did rather than be slagged off, as you said yourself we were on a good run. If any one deserves a slagging it’s the players who never put a shift in or made costly errors. McCoist had to deal with the loss of guys like Jelavic, Whittaker, Edu, Boughera, McGregor, Naismith, Davis, Lafferty, Fleck, Aluko, Bocanegra, etc they all had to be replaced, it must have been one of the hardest tasks ever seen in football, I actually think he should be applauded and not classed as being inept.
Definitely with you Parlane in the sentiment that we shouldn’t be chastising McCoist for his run as manager of the club - like you say he managed the club through our very darkest hours and he did an honest job of it
However I think it became pretty clear he was out of his depth, and his decision making was really just not at the right level and ultimately he failed to deliver when he had a budget and access to facilities that was on a different level to any of his competition
I’ll always be a massive McCoist supporter though, and grateful for the job he did as manager at such a dark time
Not sure if “out of his depth” is right way to describe him. He did after all get to the UEFA cup final as a number two and guided Rangers to a season completely unbeaten for first time in 115 years. He also managed Rangers in the premier league in the season when we were liquidated. He had managed Rangers to a 4 2 win against Celtic and had been doing ok among all sorts of unrest. McCoist and his players were playing under enormous stress being worried about their jobs. this undoubtedly would have had an impact on performance. I just think he had an awful time under horrible circumstances and maybe if things had been different he may have done much better as for his remaining weeks he was not being backed by the board and had not been for a while, situation was bad and players were not performing it was not easy. Out of his depth I don’t agree with, he knows that league inside out and the teams players and managers who operate there.
It was definitely a difficult period to manage the club, but the budget, resources, and quality of players at his disposal was on a different level to the competition in the championship and we were playing absolutely terrible football and not getting the results we should have.
Listen I don’t know how difficult things were behind the scenes, perhaps it made it impossible for him, but from the outside all we could see was continued bad decision making and a team underperforming significantly.
Budget etc was better than everyone in the league except Hearts who at the time we were on a par with, some players McCoist brought in were decent, Aluko and Bocanegra etc but money was tight we went into liqudation they then left and we then had to bring in guys like Sheils and Nicky Clark there was no money. Hearts came down from Premiership and bounced back up they had a decent team. McCoist left before December so not totally to blame for us not going up, he also brought in some decent players who just never did what they should have. Still argue not entirely his fault we were 9 points behind but could still go up via playoffs. From November onwards things got worse maybe if board had a plan when they placed McCoIst on gardening leave we would have done better but they didn’t and we ended up with nobody. Lambias and Easdale were to blame for the total shambles of bringing in McDowel who was like a rabbit in the headlights.
We had loads of time to turn it around and put in a challenge don’t blame McCoist it was not his fault. As for resources etc we were beating everybody apart from Hearts in that league. The cup game against alloa was a shocker but we had loads of injuries and an eye on the league at the time it was not a priority.
