Some of the boys train with the first team every day so Mebude would likely be training with them anyway .We have ,Barker , Ojo and Jones all available for the bench so we are hardly light in forward areas ,even though we may not rate any of them at the moment.
As mentioned in the article, Mebude has been ill, so it’s more that him taking part in the session means he’s fit and available for selection again.
All three of those players you have mentioned are out and out wingers, whereas Mebude is a striker. Even if you went for Barker, Jones and Ojo on the bench (six goals between them all season) and Defoe pulls his hamstring 30 mins in, who plays up front?
Yeah , I get that none of them are strikers but they all play in forward areas. If Defoe got injured we would likely either play Ojo through the middle or put one of them on and play Kent through the middle .There was space on the bench on Wednesday night and S.G had Patterson,Edmundson and Halliday all on there alongside Arfield and two wingers so for me he doesnt want to risk any of the youngsters at this point of the season so unlikely Mebude will feature .I would have him on the bench but dont think S.G will.
