Rangers captain James Tavernier is having a pretty mixed season so far to date. On one side, Tav has captained the club to the Europa League group stages for the second year in a row, also matching Celtic domestically so far. On the other, his stats have slid, there’s a growing nervousness in his game…
I made the same comment in a post last night. Tav is a good player for us but he isn’t a full back. Wing back yes but we would need 3 centre backs to accommodate that. The way the current two backs play is more like wing backs in any case. However, in big matches, like Europe that 3 at the back must be able to adapt to a 4/5 depending on our full match tactics. WATP.
It’s not just Tav that is making mistakes, Arfield gave the ball away too much and was slow in possession. Ojo is simply not good enough and Gerrard as a manager seems to be tactically inept. The issue of 3 at the back may be a benefit but it’s all about what teams you play against and how they are set up, Gerrard needs to vary tactics depending on opposition. Gerrard has one system and he is scared to change it. Yesterday we had 9 corners with one shot on goal, that is a disgrace against a poor Hearts team that was sitting one place off bottom spot with a 17 year old defender and arguably their best central defender in Souter being out injured along with there talisman Steven Naismith also unavailable…
