Can Rangers' Brandon Barker prove more than a Ryan Kent stand in?

Originally published at: https://www.rangersnews.uk/news/can-rangers-brandon-barker-prove-more-than-a-ryan-kent-stand-in/

When Rangers announced the signing of Brandon Barker there wasn’t a bluenose in Ibrox who didn’t treat it with at least an ounce of scepticism. Many fans felt that the former Man City youth and Hibs loanee was a diluted Ryan Kent, a solution to the filling the void left by last season’s SPFA’s Young…

SG says two players for every position, so say it’s Barker and Kent what happens to Murphy, Jones, Middleton, Hastie etc when recalled and fit. Given we have just bought Jones and Hastie would it not have been better keeping Middleton only buying one of them and bringing in an additional striker?

Would’ve could’ve should’ve - why not focus on supporting the boys we have in the team

Barker took his goal brilliantly on Saturday - he’s got clear potential with pace to burn and perhaps even an eye for goal - long way to go before he can be compared to Kent but promising start

I thought his hunger, despite not having played much, shows Gerrard is doing a great job of keeping the boys motivated even if they’re not in the first team (Edmundson, Helander, King etc)

I’ am totally behind the team but I am not going to blindly follow them if questions need asked. I pay my season ticket I have a right to ask questions. Bringing in another striker would have been support for Morelos and Dafoe and whole team, so all I am doing is pointing out that it may have been a better option than having so many players for one position, I really cannot see the logic in bringing in somebody like Hastie to just send them out again when this season is so important, fair enough its good to buy for the future but not when this year is so important, surely it would have been better to bring in a striker. We head into Europe with only two all it takes is an injury and a sending off and we are in the shit.

You’re like a broken record though, you must have made this point at least 20 times on a variety of different articles - it’s done, move on - we’ve got a great team shaping up, a great manager, and with some wind in our sails could challenge for the title this year

Dont be a fool, in football nothing is ever “done”. If we lose games through a lack of another striker or playing Ojo Dafoe and Aribo and they play the way they did against Celtic it will not be long before the unrest kicks in. Going by current displays I am not confident for the future, hopefully I am wrong.

We’ve got lots of wingers and midfielders on the books, but a lot of them appear to be surplus to requirements? Hastie is shipped out on loan to Rotherham, McCrorie to Portsmouth. Both these lads could be the future, but they could also have their careers destroyed by being told they’re not wanted at Ibrox, for now? Middleton…another Scotland Under 21…he’s been shipped off to Hibs, not wanted at Ibrox? Docherty, who had an excellent loan season at Shrewsbury, can’t even get to sit on the bench? What about Greg Stewart? Remember him? What’s he doing now? Running a Pie Shop outside Ibrox?

If they’re not good enough for SG, they should be moved on, although I think they’d be better used at Ibrox…Davis is great, but won’t be around for long…

Parlane’s right! We could have done with another striker, as Defoe is being nursed along, and Morelos will be on his bike, when a suitable English Premier Club gets desperate, (probably January) and needs a striker.

We’ve plenty of players, but not in the right slots!

It can’t be a lot of fun living life with the glass barren and empty all the time, the club is actually moving forward with real talent throughout - but some people can only see the negative and find fault with everything - cheer up!

Exactly right Fingolf we have Kent, Jones, Murphy, Middleton, Hastie, Barker, Kent and Aribo all for left wing and only two strikers one being 36. Not only that but we spent nearly 4 million on two defenders who are not playing. Aribo and Ojo are promising but no where near the standard we need to get past Christmas in Europe or really put up a strong title fight. 7 million on Kent when he has no international caps and was not wanted by anybody other than Leeds is concerning because at 7million that would be nothing to clubs in England who spend over 12 million on somebody like McBurnie or Burke both donkeys. This is not about glass being empty all the time, this is genuine concern for a club I have supported for over 50 years. Not everyone can be like kingholesandballs who is blind to the worry and concern. I have many great things to say about our club, our manager and our players but currently I have concerns. Kingholebaws I do not question your constant optimism and slag you off, all I do is stick to comments on your argument, I will not discus your state of mind or make derogatory personal statements about you but you continually become personal and make derogatory comments of me, a fellow fan. In this thread alone you accuse me of " only seeing the negative" “not having fun in my life”, “my glass is always empty”, “I should Cheer up”, that “I find fault with everything”, that I am like “a broken record”" that I do not support the boys" etc. It is all because I do not agree with you and your overly optimistic viewpoint. If this forum was called lets all praise rangers and please do not point out worries or concerns I would not be here. I like debate but you cannot debate all you do is slag people off if they don’t agree with you and that is a pathetic way to be. For the record I am a very happy person and I am actually happy we are getting results but I have a right to ask searching questions this is why the forum exists,

You don’t seem to like having your opinions questioned though do you, Parlane? It’s alright you having a constant moan but as soon as you get called out it’s not cool

And this is genius:

Kingholebaws I do not question your constant optimism and slag you off”

That was a joke on your name LOL… can you not take a joke it was irony you just dont get it. Your comments towards me were not jokes… I love getting my opinions questioned but you do not question them all you do is make sarky comments, look at this thread for the evidence or the Kamara Pirlo thread and look at your comments compared with Donald’s or Greslyman we got into a discussion about football you could never do that all you do is make sarky comments thing is you brought me down to your level and i went off for three days came back and within an hour you were at it again with sarky derogatory comments…worrying thing is you are completely oblivious to your abusive behaviour.

Mate the one time I actually engaged you in discussion you completely lost the rag and started calling me a weirdo, a troll and a stalker - I think you need to look up the dictionary definition of irony

Yes its kamara, pirlo thread look at how nasty and infantile your comments are and the lack of discussion on football. Sorry but you are a Stalker. see The Kamara Pirlo thread you dont even talk to me i was in a discussion with Donald and you come on and you tell him not to discuss anything with me…lol how pathetic is that, were you feeling left out.

I was trying to help the poor soul from the fate that has befallen me - trying to talk sense into a door post

You really talk mince, I have never had a debate about football with you, you say something I question it then you take the huff and send derogatory comments.

Steady on guys! We all want Rangers to be “top of the pile”!
However, it’s quite legit. to query what we’re doing with all those wingers and midfield men, when over half of them probably will never play? We would be better off if we had another striker, to guard against Morelos leaving in January, or Defoe falling off his Zimmer!

I’ve followed the team for 60 years…unfortunately many from afar…and last season when I expressed an opinion that Tavernier was great going forward, but he wasn’t great at defending. For expressing this view, I was accused of being a Celtic Supporter??

Come on, we’re all entitled to our opinions, about team selections and individual players!
But, I hope we all want Rangers to do well!

Most certainly (and couldn’t agree more on Tav). I don’t disagree we’ve done some strange business this summer in midfield, and another striker would be great but do we need 3 strikers when we only play with one? Maybe, but you can’t have 3 top strikers and keep them all happy, hence Stewart.

I do think we’ve got genuine strength in depth now (our Achilles heel last season), and also a steel and determination to get wins on the board in difficult fixtures we dropped points in last year - there is so much cause for optimism here and Gerrard continues to impress.

Of course it’s fair enough to call out some of the concerns, to question decisions, etc - but our friend Parlane literally blankets the forum with the exact same negativity regardless of whether it’s related to the article - an all encompassing negative haze and can’t handle getting called out for it

your phrase “Being called out” implies my opinion is wrong and my negativity should not be allowed and I should be told off. You always think I should get behind the team and ignore what I consider to be failings, sorry to say it but that is not how forums work. Not only this but your comments towards me are vindictive, and abusive when I do not agree with your blind optimism. Yes I have made the point on other threads but it is always in line with what is being asked. Sorry to say it but we have far to many players who are not contributing and we have Aribo and Ojo who I think are overhyped and lack experience in big game environments and Dafoe who has lost it, hence the defeat against Celtic. I totally disagree with you on the striker situation Stewart is not and never will be a striker he was not bought for that role the way a Shankland or a Cosgrove would. We are lacking a big out and out powerful striker or a tricky McCoIst type of guy who can score every week with knee or his arse, we miss far to many opportunities. We also cannot stick with one striker up front for every match, there will be games that require two especially in Europe when we may be getting beat 1 nil with 15 minutes to go. What do we do if one of our strikers is injured and the bench has no one who can snatch a goal? As for me saying the same thing on threads, all you seem to do on threads is no matter what the criticism is you come back with the same response, you just ignore valid negative comments on every thread and come back with let’s all get behind the team we are doing great, we have a brilliant team, kent is our saviour, we have strength in depth, we can challenge Celtic etc etc…that I’m afraid is not the true picture or many people’s viewpoint and this forum is where views should be allowed,. The term you use " calling out" is pathetic who do you think you are, the forum police?? Everyone has a right to an opinion whether you like it or not. The funny thing is your the only person I have came across with these constant optimistic views, are you on happy pills?, I’m beginning to think your SG’s wife

Hahah while I’m a big fan of SG I’m afraid to say I’m not his wife, but I am the forum police :sunglasses:

Right I’ll hold my hands up for getting a bit carried away with the back and forth on here, it’s in my nature to run with the wind up. I’ll start behaving but I won’t stop with the optimism - the future’s bright!!!
